How the Common Routes Compare
Hospital developmental centers and general private practices. Usually billed through insurance, so out-of-pocket cost depends on your deductible and coverage. The bigger cost is time: because most centers and practices evaluate many conditions rather than focusing solely on autism, waits of 6 to 12 months are commonly reported.
School evaluations. Free, but different: schools evaluate educational eligibility, not medical diagnosis. A school evaluation cannot be used for medical therapy authorization, so many families end up needing both.
